What Is Pigmentation?

Pigmentation or Coloration is determined by the amount of melanin in the skin.  Melanin is the pigment that produces the various shades and colors of human skin, hair, and eyes. Skin coloration can happen due to several of factors, such as sun exposure, genetics, and certain medical conditions requiring skin pigmentation removal.

What are the key factors that cause Pigmentation?

When Melanocytes , the cells that produces melanin, increase their melanin production we will see Pigmentation or darkening of the skin. The causes of pigmentation can be broadly categorized into genetic, environmental, and hormonal factors. Here are some of the key factors that contribute to pigmentation:

  • Genetics: The amount and type of melanin produced by melanocytes are largely influenced by genetics. People with a family history of certain pigmentation issues may be more prone to similar conditions.
  • Sun Exposure:Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is a major environmental factor that affects pigmentation. Exposure to sunlight stimulates the production of melanin as a protective response. Prolonged sun exposure without adequate sun protection can lead to various pigmentation issues, including freckles, sunspots, and overall skin darkening.
  • Hormonal Changes:Hormonal fluctuations can influence pigmentation. Conditions such as melasma, characterized by dark patches on the skin, are often associated with hormonal changes, such as those occurring during pregnancy, oral contraceptive use, or hormonal therapy.
  • Inflammation and Skin Trauma:Inflammatory conditions, skin injuries, and trauma can lead to changes in pigmentation. PIH (Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation) can occur after skin conditions like acne, eczema, or psoriasis, leaving dark marks on the skin.
  • Age:The natural aging process can contribute to changes in pigmentation. As people age, they may develop age spots or sunspots due to accumulative sun exposure over the years.
  • Medications and Chemicals:Certain medications, such as some antibiotics and chemotherapy drugs, can cause changes in pigmentation as a side effect.
  • Nutritional Deficiencies:Certain nutritional deficiencies, particularly those involving vitamins crucial for skin health, can impact pigmentation.

Pigmentation Solutions At GloGen Beauty Clinic

At GloGen Beauty Clinic in Vancouver we have a variety of treatments to resolve your Pigmentation concern.

Intense Pulsed light (IPL)

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy, also known as photofacial or photorejuvenation, uses broad-spectrum light to target various skin issues, including pigmentation concerns. IPL can be effective in treating pigmentation by specifically targeting melanin, Here's how IPL can help in pigmentation treatment:

  • Reduction of Red and Brown Lesions: IPL delivers a broad spectrum of light wavelengths, and the melanin in pigmented lesions absorbs this light and converts it to heat. This process selectively damages the pigmented cells while leaving the surrounding skin unaffected. IPL is commonly used to treat hyperpigmentation issues such as sunspots, age spots, and freckles. The heat generated during the treatment helps break down the excess melanin in these pigmented areas, leading to a gradual fading of the pigmentation over time. IPL can target a range of pigmentation concerns, including both red and brown lesions. It can be used to address issues like rosacea and broken capillaries as well as brown pigmentation caused by sun damage.
  • Collagen Stimulation: IPL can stimulate collagen production in the skin which can lead to improved skin texture and reduced fine lines.
  • Evening Out Skin Tone:IPL treatments can contribute to a more even skin tone by targeting various types of pigmentation. This is particularly beneficial for individuals with uneven pigmentation due to sun exposure or other factors.

Micro-needling

Micro-needling, also known as collagen induction therapy, creates controlled micro-injuries in the skin. Micro-needling can be beneficial in the treatment of pigmentation issues through several mechanisms:

  • Stimulation of Collagen Production: Micro-needling stimulates the skin's natural healing response, leading to an increase in collagen production. Collagen is a key structural protein in the skin that contributes to its strength and elasticity. The production of new collagen can help improve skin texture and reduce the appearance of pigmentation irregularities.
  • Enhanced Product Absorption:The micro-channels created by micro-needling allow for better absorption of topical skincare products. This is particularly relevant for products containing ingredients that target pigmentation.
  • Breaking Down Pigmented Cells: Micro-needling can help break down pigmented cells in the epidermis (top layer of the skin) through the controlled injury and subsequent healing process. This can be beneficial for treating conditions like hyperpigmentation, sunspots, or melasma.
  • Evening Out Skin Tone:By promoting skin renewal and exfoliation, micro-needling can contribute to a more even skin tone. This is particularly useful for addressing areas of uneven pigmentation caused by factors such as sun damage or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation(PIH).
